STEM Grades 3–5

STEM on OLE for grades 3–5 gives you access to relevant, hands-on activities for a variety of topics that allow students to work through the design process by creating their own solutions to real-world problems. Each project provides regular opportunities for students to practice both scientific inquiry and the engineering process to ultimately improve their critical thinking skills and their ability to think innovatively.

Try it Out

Go to Bird Feeders Lab: Bird Food Is Served

Bird Feeders Lab: Bird Food Is Served

Students will think like engineers as they design and build a prototype bird feeder. They will then use real-world test data to decide on changes to make their bird feeder better.

Go to Bird Feeders Interactivity: How to Design a Bird House

Bird Feeders Interactivity: How to Design a Bird House

Not sure how to design for a bird? Let your students watch as the engineering design process is applied to the building of a bird house.

Go to Engineering and Technology Interactivity: Which Design Works Best?

Engineering and Technology Interactivity: Which Design Works Best?

Students can review this lab animation to help them understand how prototype testing can lead to better designs.

Go to Bird Feeders Interactivity: Build a Bird Feeder

Bird Feeders Interactivity: Build a Bird Feeder

If students are having a hard time coming up with a bird feeder design, have them try this one and see if it they might improve on it.
